Mt. Tamalpais
Cataract Gulch

The Cataract Gulch Trail begins near the south end of the dam on Alpine Lake and ascends a steep canyon to arrive on Bolinas Ridge, offering spectacular views. The trail was constructed by the WPA in the 1930s and is interesting in its own right. It is quite steep, but only about two miles beginning to end. For those who might find the hike a little too challenging to attempt, there's an alternative. Instead of driving to Alpine Dam, drive to the the parking area on the Panoramic Highway and hike the quarter-mile down to the Laurel Dell picnic area and meet us, then we can all hike back up to the viewpoint together.
