Pt. Reyes National Seashore –
Tule Elk Preserve
Along our part of the Pacific coast, the San Andreas Fault separates a piece of land from the mainland and forms Tomales Bay. All the land to the west is protected by the federal government as the Pt. Reyes National Seashore. The bay itself is a paradise for nature lovers - kayaking, sailing, fishing, and the locally famous Horseneck Clams, that can get to be several feet long.
The northern tip of the Pt. Reyes peninsula is home to a re-established herd of Tule Elk, and this time of year is the rutting season. The males fight one another for domination of the herd and the winner takes charge of as many females as he can manage. The defeated males are exiled to sulk by themselves in the many canyons that empty into Tomales Bay and the ocean.
Our hike begins at the parking lot at Pierce Ranch. The trail is level to rolling all the way out to Tomales Point, about 5 miles away. The plan is to hike out about three miles.
Bring a lunch and weather-appropriate clothing. A camera and binoculars are good, too.
Plan to meet at the trailhead
at 11 AM.
