Mt. Tamalpais - Pilots Knob
Our February hike is steep but short. From the trailhead at Bon Tempe Lake it climbs 500 feet through pine, fir and madrone to the top of Pilot Knob, a prominent knoll on Mt. Tam’s north shoulder. The grassy summit, where we’ll pause for lunch, offers great views all around. The return hike takes us along the shore of Lagunitas Lake. The entire hike is less than three miles.
Getting there from the south:
From 101, take Sir Francis Drake Blvd. to the city of Fairfax, and head out the Fairfax-Bolinas Road.
Getting there from the north:
From 101 at San Rafael, go west on 2nd Street. At San Anselmo continue west on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. to the city of Fairfax, and head out the Fairfax-Bolinas Road.
About 2 miles up the Bolinas Road (which is very narrow), turn left onto Sky Oaks Rd. Stop at the ranger station and pay the day-use fee, then continue on the the road’s end at the picnic area.
Plan to meet at the trailhead
at 11 AM.
