Mt. Tamalpais - Cataract Gulch
The numerous waterfalls will be full and spectacular.
Meet at the trailhead above Alpine Lake Dam at 11 AM.
Getting There
If you like, you can drive to the trailhead from Mill Valley by following Hwy. 1 north. Opposite the turnoff to Bolinas, turn right onto the Fairfax-Boliinas Road and follow it up over the ridge and down the other side to the trailhead (very steep and winding).
Otherwise, we’ll try to rendezvous in the parking lot in front of the movie theater in Fairfax at 10:30, and carpool out the Fairfax-Bolinas Road to the trailhead. Sometimes finding a parking space near the dam can be challenging...
The Cataract Gulch Trail begins near the south end of the dam on Alpine Lake and ascends a steep canyon to arrive on Bolinas Ridge, offering spectacular views. The trail was constructed by the WPA in the 1930s and is interesting in its own right. It is quite steep, but only about two miles beginning to end. It is mostly one big waterfall, one of the best the Bay Area has to offer.
We’ll hike all the way to the Panoramic Highway where we’ll eat lunch and enjoy the view.
Bring a lunch and weather-appropriate clothing.
